The Senior Special Adviser to the President Of Nigeria on Diaspora & Foreign Affairs, Hon Abike Dabiri Erewa gave a passionate and insightful speech at the House Of Commons on the 16th Of May 2016 at an event organized by the All Party Parliment Group Nigeria Chaired by Labour Member of Parliament Kate Osamor.
The event themed "Partnership In Practice : Engaging Nigerian Diaspora in Support Of Nigeria's Developmet" was aimed a creating a dailogue on diasporan affairs and how they can contribute towards national development. Mrs Erewa spoke about the great contibutions Nigerians in the diaspora have made in remittances to the tune of £21Billion in 2015. She also spoke about the hard work she had been doing along with the House & Senate Diasproa Committes Chairs, towards passing the Diaspora Bill, creation of a Diaspora Policy and success of the Diaspora Bond in recent times.
She also said that Nigerians living in the diaspora has to take advantage of the golden opportunity created by President Mohammadu Buhari who for the first time has created an office for the diaspora at an executive level saying "it shows his willingness to engage" with the 12-15million Nigerians in the diaspora.
Hon Abike Dabiri Erewa also spoke about the need of Nigerians in the Diaspora to patner in the fight against corruption. She mad strong comment about the British Prime Ministers "Fantastically Corrupt" description of Nigerian as a nation, saying that the british government should "return the money back to us, and return what belongs to us".
She said that "the persone who steals is just as guilty as the person who receives the stolen money"
She also made an sent a message in the form of an appeal to British parliament through the Member Of Parliament & Chair of the event Kate Osamor that they ned "to strengthen their anti-money laundering laws and make britian less attractive to looters and not be a safe haven for them"
She stated that "Corruption is a cankerworm that must be destroyed...saying that if If we tackle we would have solved most Nigerias problems". She also praised the President saying, "We have a president who has the political will to solve the problem of corruption...so let us use President Buhari to solve the problem, He is not going to steal money his personal intergrity speaks volumes"
She also recognized the role that the youth have to play in the fight against corruption expressing her dismay, when she saw youths in Nigeria carrying plackcards defending & supporting someone who was taken to court for stealing.. emphasising the need for a reorientation and change in our moral values.
It was a great event, well attended and very interactive as community leaders and memebr ased her question which she gladly answered and at the end of the event she presented a copy of Diaspora Quaterly Magazing to Kate Osamor MP.
